The choice is clear – Isuzu D-Max X-Terrain is the Best Pick-Up Truck You Can Buy Today

The choice is clear – Isuzu D-Max X-Terrain is the Best Pick-Up Truck You Can Buy Today!

Over the past 20 years, the pick-up truck segment has grown tremendously as not only many new models entered the market but the pick-up truck was also considered just as good as an alternative to the passenger car. This is especially so for those with active lifestyles as well as those who want a tough vehicle that can be used for work on weekdays and play for weekends.

The Isuzu D-Max X-Terrain is one of those pick up trucks that caters to almost every need and has won outstanding awards such as the 2021 & 2022 Best Pick-Up Truck of the Year by Carlist.my and 2021 Wapcar’s Editor’s Pick & Consumer Votes. Additionally, the model also won the Rider ATH Creators Choice Pick-Up Truck of the Year 2021, CarPlus Editor’s Choice Pick-Up Truck of the Year 2021, and DSF.my as 2021 as Vehicle of the Year (VOTY) – Pick-Up Truck category.

Motoring experts in Malaysia regularly evaluate all the different pick-up trucks that are introduced, and offer their opinions. They have consistently been impressed with the D-Max, with an award for the Best 4×4 Pick-up Truck (Manual) from CarSifu in 2022 and in 2020 from DSF.my as Vehicle of the Year (VOTY) – Pick-Up Truck category.

And now, the Isuzu D-Max X-Terrain is set to continue impressing the world with the newly updated X-Terrain for 2023. Introduced just recently, the facelifted X-Terrain features a host of new updates that is set to take an already impressive pick-up truck even further.

What makes the Isuzu D-Max X-Terrain capable?

‘Capability’ for a pick-up truck is largely demonstrated by how it tackles off-road terrain and with their many decades of experience, Isuzu engineers have been able to ensure that the Isuzu D-Max X-Terrain is extremely capable in virtually any environment.

Deep water doesn’t mean it’s the end of the journey if it’s an Isuzu D-Max X-Terrain as the vehicle can easily cross water that is up to 800 mm deep. These days, that’s also a useful capability to have even when driving around town with flash floods occurring at certain times of the year! While other motorists have to pull over and wait for the water to subside, an Isuzu D-Max X-Terrain owner can get across confidently.

Even when the ground is slippery or muddy, the Isuzu D-Max X-Terrain can still be driven safely, thanks to the Rear Differential Lock. The Differential Lock, when activated, will make both rear wheels rotate at the same speed, rather than one side spinning faster when there is less grip and drawing all the power away from the wheel with grip. By forcing the other wheel to also have continued power, it will be possible to get over difficult terrain. With the Rear Differential Lock, it is less likely that you have to get out (in the mud) to figure out how to get your truck out of trouble. With the Rear Differential Lock present, drivers will have less worries about getting stuck deep in the jungle. This means that they can go further in confidence and explore new places.

And for the newly updated range of Isuzu D-Max models, the Rear Differential Lock is now available exclusively across the 4×4 range only, offering practicality and off-roading capability.

For better control over the power transfer from the engine to the wheels, the Terrain Command system of the Isuzu D-Max X-Terrain makes it easy for the driver to choose either 2WD, 4WD or the Low Range 4WD. Furthermore, the Terrain Command system does not require working a shift lever as all that is needed is to turn a rotary knob on the dashboard. In most cases, the switch between mode can be done while on the move as well, making it unnecessary to come to a stop like in the older trucks.

The Terrain Command system thus extends the versatility of the Isuzu D-Max X-Terrain conveniently. For driving on highways, 2WD is ideal as it directs power only to the rear wheels. This reduces friction and with less energy wasted, fuel efficiency can also be improved. Upon leaving the highway and rough or muddy ground is encountered, all it takes is a turn of the Terrain Command knob and power flows to all four wheels for maximum grip and stability. In the event of very difficult terrain, the Terrain Command can be used to activate the Low Range of gears which will maximise power and traction by using a set of lower gear ratios.

Safety is important too

Today, being the Best Pick-Up Truck is not just about off-road capability, durability and reliability. Because trucks are also used more extensively on highways, where speeds are higher and there is more traffic, safety is also of even greater importance.

This is where Isuzu excels spectacularly and that is all thanks to ALLSIGHT – Isuzu’s Comprehensive Safety Technology. The Isuzu ALLSIGHT is a suite that packages all the available safety systems under one name. The systems offer more than 30 different safety features and employs advanced sensors, a stereo camera and cutting-edge technology to mitigate road hazards. Some of the safety tech includes: Turn Assist, Forward Collision Warning, Autonomous Emergency Braking, Pedal Misapplication Mitigation, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Departure Warning, Automatic High Beams, Blind Spot Monitor and more. This does not include all the already available Active and Passive Safety Features.

The Isuzu D-Max X-Terrain model is equipped with Advanced Driver Assist System (ADAS) which improves safety by helping the driver to be aware of dangers around the vehicle, as well as take autonomous action when necessary to prevent an accident (or reduce its damaging effects). ADAS makes use of sensors to scan the surroundings and detect possible dangers. In this way, the Isuzu D-Max driver will be able to act earlier, possibly avoiding an accident.

One example is the Forward Collision Warning (FCW) system which uses a stereoscopic camera or ADAS camera to scan the road ahead. When it detects another vehicle being too close and a collision is likely, the driver will be alerted. If the driver does not act correctly – like braking or reducing speed – then the brakes will automatically activate to stop the vehicle using Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB).

The ADAS camera also monitors the road markings to determine if the vehicle is correctly positioned within its lane. Should it start to stray out of the lane – which can be dangerous to other road-users – the driver will be alerted by the Lane Departure Warning (LDW) system.

With Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), the driver’s workload can be reduced as the vehicle will literally drive by itself. Once the desired speed is set, all the driver must do is steer. With conventional cruise control systems, the driver still must watch for vehicles ahead and disengage or brake when getting too close. However, with ACC, the camera detects the vehicle ahead and the on-board computer determines the safe distance to maintain, adjusting the speed when necessary.  Should the speed drop to zero, ACC will still be active and resume when the vehicle ahead starts moving again.

Most safety systems focus on the road ahead but on the Isuzu D-Max X-Terrain, there are sensors which also monitor the sides and even the rear of the vehicle. With the Blindspot Monitor, the areas along both sides of the vehicle are constantly scanned and if another vehicle (or even a motorcyclist) is close by, the driver will be alerted. This will ensure that a collision is avoided in case the driver decides to make a turn or change lanes.

Rear radar sensors also monitor vehicles coming up from behind and can warn the driver if a collision might occur. The same sensors are also used for the Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) system which is very useful when reversing out of a parking bay. This system actively scans both sides which the driver might not be able to see. If a vehicle is approaching, the driver will be alerted so that he can stop the vehicle and avoid an accident.

These are just a few of the advanced systems in the Isuzu D-Max X-Terrain which make it the best pick-up truck you can buy. Others include Pedal Misapplication Mitigation, Manual Speed Limiter, Automatic High Beam and a Multi Collision Brake system.

What’s new in the enhanced version of Isuzu D-Max 2023?

With the Isuzu D-Max X-Terrain already being such a potent pick-up truck, it was difficult to identify exactly what needed to be enhanced. This is where Isuzu Malaysia worked closely with its dealers to identify areas that needed to be refreshed. Working closely with its dealers who in turn gathered feedback from customers, Isuzu Malaysia enhanced the following aspects of the 7 variants of the Isuzu D-Max including the X-Terrain:

  1. New Front Grille
One of the most distinguishing aspects of the new Isuzu D-Max is the updated front grille that is not only blacked out, but also features fang-like features that give the Isuzu D-Max a more aggressive yet purposeful appearance.
  2. New 18-inch wheels
No update is complete without a new set of wheels, and that is exactly what the new Isuzu D-Max has received. Newly designed black wheels give the Isuzu D-Max X-Terrain a sporty character, one that suits customers who use their Isuzu D-Max in an urban environment as well. The D-Max Premium also has new design 18-inch wheels in sliver while the Auto Plus and Standard variants are new design 17-inche wheels.
  3. New Black Combination Leather Seats with Anti-Vibration Elastic Comfort Foam
One of the biggest updates to the interior of the Isuzu D-Max X-Terrain and Premium variants is the new black leather that X-Terrain replaces the previous brown leather. With comfort in mind, the new seats also feature anti-vibration elastic comfort foam that make long-distance journeys more bearable. Also new for the Auto Plus and Standard variants is the new design fabric seat.
  4. Wireless Charger with New Type-C USB Charging Port
One of the biggest conveniences the new Isuzu D-Max X-Terrain and Premium variants gets is a wireless charge pad. Charging phones has never been easier with customers simply needing to place their phones on the charge pad to be charged. But that’s not all, for those wanting a quicker charge up, there’s also Type-C charging port that allows for a quicker charge up for those all-important low-battery moments. The Auto Plus variant also has the convenience of the wireless charger pad.
  5. New Digital Video Recorder
There is no longer a need for owners to purchase aftermarket dash cams as the Isuzu D-Max X-Terrain actually comes standard with dual built in Digital Video Recorders. The front unit records at 1440 pixels while the rear camera records at 1080 pixels. Not only that but there is also a memory card included for free so there is no additional cost incurred.
  6. Upgraded Suspension
New for the Isuzu D-Max 3.0L Premium variant is the updated suspension. While the leaf-spring and absorbers have been
  7. retained, the overall configuration has been retained to handle heavier payloads. The 3.0L Premium variant is now able to handle 775kg.
