The Entrepreneurial Drive of Andrew Ooi: From Automotive Technician to Food Stall Owner

Andrew Ooi’s journey is a testament to the spirit of entrepreneurship, the power of motivation, and the enduring love of family. It’s a tale that reflects the power of transitions, adaptability, and the pursuit of excellence in every venture. 

Andrew began his career with oil-streaked hands and the hum of an engine in the backdrop. As an automotive technician, his days were spent understanding the intricate details of vehicles. The knowledge he acquired in Singapore shaped him into a car aficionado, not only proficient in repairing vehicles but also in modifying them to perfection. 

But life has its own plans. In 2003, the call of familial duty beckoned him back to Ipoh, where he undertook the responsibility of his father’s legacy: the Assam Curry Fish Head food stall. While the scents of curry replaced the smell of motor oil, the same dedication he brought to the workshop was now redirected towards mastering the nuances of a food business. The transition wasn’t easy; after all, moving from diagnosing engine troubles to ensuring the perfect consistency of curry is a leap of its own kind. However, for Andrew, challenges were but opportunities in disguise. His technician’s meticulousness metamorphosed into an entrepreneur’s vision.

Years into the food business, with its fair share of highs and lows, Andrew found himself grappling with another challenge. His old pickup truck, a trusty companion in sourcing ingredients, began to falter. But Andrew’s pragmatic approach, shaped by years as a technician, kicked in. He sought a vehicle that wasn’t just functional, but also value for money. After much research, test drives, and comparisons, he found the ideal fit: the Isuzu D-Max Auto Plus 4×2. Every aspect, from its spacious cargo hold to the 1.9L engine’s fuel efficiency, resonated with his business needs. Whether it was hauling 40KG of seafood from Kg. Simee Wet Market or ensuring easy cleaning post-transit, the D-Max proved its mettle.

But above all, it’s in the little moments that the D-Max shines. On off days, the Ooi family ventures to the highlands or explores rural areas, with Andrew at the wheel and his loved ones by his side. Their kids, comfortable in the rear, thanks to the air conditioning, absorb the beauty of Malaysia, making memories along the way. 

In his life journey, Andrew found his perfect companion in his wife, his “Ms. Right” – someone who stood by him as he juggled the demands of work and family. And on the road, his “Mr. Right”, the Isuzu D-Max Auto Plus, has been the silent partner, making every journey, whether for work or pleasure, an experience to cherish.
